Das Forschungsinstitut für Philosophie Hannover vergibt zwei Fellowships für einen Forschungsaufenthalt
vom 01. Oktober 2014 bis zum 31. Juli 2015.
Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen, die im Fach Philosophie oder einem geistes- bzw. sozialwissenschaftlichen
Fach über ethisch relevante Themen promovieren oder sich habilitieren,
erhalten die Möglichkeit, ihrem Forschungsvorhaben in einem kreativen, interdisziplinären
und internationalen Umfeld nachzugehen.

September 2014 in Münster Die Klausurwoche wird durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) fnanziert und vom Centrum für Bioethik (CfB) in Münster organisiert. Ende: 19.09.2014 17:00 | | Text: | “Practical Reasons: Their Metaphysics, Epistemology, and Creation” Our special guest will be David Enoch (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel). Enoch defends a strong version of normative and moral realism – the view that normative and moral truths are universal, objective, and are discovered rather than constructed. In his lectures, Enoch will first expand on the nature of the debate and underlying motivations for realism. He will then address two main challenges to such a view – namely, the claim that even if there are such reasons or normative truths we have no way of coming to know about them; and worries having to do with normative disagreement. Enoch will conclude with highlighting a way in which even on a realist account, reasons can still be created by us, drawing some more practical lessons. The Summer School mainly aims at professional philosophers and advanced graduate students. Attendance is free, but limited to 50 participants – to be selected on the basis of motivation and qualification. Online application is possible through May 15. International Summer School at the University of Bamberg, Germany July 28th – August 8th 2014  The University of Bamberg Philosophy Department together with the Forum Theoretical Philosophy will be hosting the second Summer School in Theoretical Philosophy. Our topic this year will be “Individuals and Indeterminacy. Perspectives in Contemporary Ontology” and we are looking forward to an excellent program with some of the world’s most distinguished scholars in the field. Kit Fine (NYU), Peter van Inwagen (Notre Dame), Peter Simons (Trinity College Dublin) and Gabriele De Anna (University of Bamberg) will present their current research and discuss their recent work with graduate students from all over the world.
Additionally, all participants will be given the opportunity to propose an essay for a peer-reviewed anthology which will be published with Bamberg University Press in 2015 (Because of the peer-review process, participation in the Summer School does not, however, guarantee publication).

| Patientenautonomie und Informed Consent – Zwei Seiten derselben Medaille? | | | Die Bedingung der informierten Zustimmung spielt eine zentrale Rolle in der Medizinethik. Sowohl bei der inhaltlichen Bestimmung der Bedingung der informierten Einwilligung als auch in der Begründung ihres hohen Stellenwerts wird dabei meist auf die Autonomie von Personen verwiesen: Informierte Einwilligung wird als Instrument dafür verstanden, den Respekt vor der Patientenautonomie sicher zu stellen, und ihr hoher Stellenwert wird mit dem Wert/der Wichtigkeit von Autonomie begründet. Gegenstand des Workshops ist die Frage, inwiefern und ob überhaupt ein solch enger Zusammenhang zwischen informierter Einwilligung und Patientenautonomie besteht. Dabei sollen einerseits autonomiebasierte Bestimmungen und Begründungen der Bedingung der informierten Zustimmung betrachtet werden. Im Rahmen des Workshops erhalten fünf Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler die Möglichkeit ihre eigenen Forschungsprojekte in Form eines Posters zu präsentieren. Bewerben können sich Masterstudierende und Promovierende der Philosophie, Medizin, der Gesundheitswissenschaften oder Rechtswissenschaften mit einem kurzen Exposé (max. 500 Wörter) zu ihrem Projekt sowie einer kurzen Begründung ihrer Motivation zur Teilnahme an dem Workshop. Summer School Groningen: Epistemology and Cognition

From 25 to 29 August 2014, the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of
Groningen will host two co-located summer schools with a common theme:
Epistemology and Cognition. One of the summer schools will focus on
contemporary philosophy and is co-organized with the Department of
Philosophy of the University of Bristol. The other summer school will have
a historical focus and is co-organized with the Department of Philosophy
of the Radboud University Nijmegen. The summer schools are intended for
graduate students (master?s and PhD), post-docs and early-career
researchers in philosophy. Participants can follow exclusively one of the
two tracks, or mix-and-match tutorials from both tracks according to their
interests. Student sessions and scholarships: we'll be offering 4
scholarships of EUR 400 (including registration fee) for the best student

The course will be taught by Mathias Risse (Harvard University). It gives participants the opportunity to discuss Mathias Risses recent book On Global Justice which is an attempt to offer a unified theory of topics such as distributive justice, fairness in trade, human rights, obligations to future generations and immigration. In 2014, the Department of Philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University will
hold a three-week summer school in logic and formal epistemology for
promising undergraduates in philosophy, mathematics, computer science,
linguistics, economics, and other sciences.The goals are to introduce
promising students to cross-disciplinary research early in their careers,
and forge lasting links between the various disciplines.
The summer school will be held from Monday, June 2 to Friday, June 20,
2014 on the Carnegie Mellon campus. Tuition and accommodations are free.

Bielefeld Master Class 2014
with Philip Kitcher (Columbia University New York) PRAGMATISM, TRUTH, AND PROGRESS May 26-28, 2014
Bielefeld University Classical Pragmatism, particularly in the work of John Dewey, aimed at a reconstruction of philosophy that would reconnect philosophy with problems of inquiry and with the conditions of contemporary life. In Preludes to Pragmatism (Oxford Uniersity Press, 2012), Philip Kitcher explored the possibility of reviving this Deweyan vision. In this year’s Bielefeld Master Class he wants to take further steps towards realizing this vision. Among the main tools of Pragmatism are approaches to truth, knowledge, and values. The lectures will begin with an attempt to formulate these proposals clearly. Kitcher then tries to use them to tackle issues about scientific progress, about social progress, and about the progressive articulation of human values. Kitcher’s Master Class on Pragmatism includes five lectures. The schedule is:
