Sommer School Bioethics

Summer School 2017

The Faculty of Philosophy, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the Department of Practical Philosophy (Ethics, Law and Economy) of the Institute of Philosophy, FernUniversität in Hagen, in cooperation with three more partner universities, organize from 4th to 10th September 2017 the International Summer SchoolBioethics in Context IV: Philosophy and Life Sciences in Dialogue. Theoretical and Practical Questions.The summer school will take place in the Guest House of the Sofia University in Kiten, Bulgaria.


The summer school 2017 is dedicated to the dialog between philosophy and life sciences and the complex theoretical and practical questions raised by the recent development of life sciences and technologies. The philosophical reflection in the field of bioethics is engaged with a deeper understanding of life and an exploration of scientific knowledge and its implementation’s options in regard to the ethical norms, human goals, and inherent risks for the individual and social life. We will discuss on methodological level different ways of thinking and arguments as regards newly obtained technological knowledge.


The students from the Graduate Programme “Philosophy - Philosophy in European Context” and PhD students of the FernUniversität could apply for the summer school from 1st January till 30th April 2017. The admission covers the accommodation costs in Kiten and the costs of transportation from Sofia to Kiten.


In order to apply for the summer school the students must provide a motivation letter, CV, and rely on high grades from their recent studies. We expect all participants to prepare a presentation on a chosen topic or a project related to the subject of the summer school (20 minutes). The official language of the summer school is English.
