Bruxelles, 10. Mai
Centre Perelman de Philosophie du Droit de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles,
Le Service de Philosophie Morale et Politique de l’Université de Liège,
recrutent :
2 chercheurs boursiers (h/f) à temps plein (+/- 1700 Euros net/mois),

operated with other universities. Some 36,500 students are currently
pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of
Helsinki.
The Faculty of Arts is Finland?s oldest institution for teaching and
research in the humanities and the largest in terms of the structure and
range of disciplines. It is also a significant international community
fostering research, education and cultural interaction.
The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies
(http://www.helsinki.fi/phca/) belongs to the Faculty of Arts and has a
strong profile in the multidisciplinary research and teaching of the
humanities.
The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies at the
University of Helsinki invites applications for a
PROFESSOR
The field of the position is theoretical philosophy.
According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor
shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide teaching based on
it, follow developments in research and participate in societal
interaction and international cooperation in his or her field.
The professorship covers history of philosophy, epistemology, logic, and
systematic philosophy. The new professor will be an internationally
recognized, dynamic, first class researcher and teacher. While there is no
special emphasis on any particular area among these disciplines, it is an
important requirement that the new professor shall further the research
lines in which the unit of theoretical philosophy has been traditionally
strong and initiate new development
The unit of theoretical philosophy of the University of Helsinki has a
long standing international tradition in philosophical logic and
systematic philosophy (metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of
language). The unit cooperates closely with the philosophy unit (teaching
in Swedish) which belongs to the same department, and the research groups
in methodology and philosophy of social sciences in the Faculty of Social
Sciences.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee
to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top level
scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific

Helsinki. Moreover, in bilingual universities offering degrees both in
Finnish and Swedish, holders of teaching and research positions must also
have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Finnish and
Swedish. According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki,
foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens and Finnish citizens who
have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this
requirement without a separate application. If the successful applicant is
not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he or she is expected to acquire
moderate proficiency, as becoming proficient in Finnish or Swedish is
important for the professor?s full integration into the workplace and
Finnish society. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the
appointee must also have good English skills.
When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be
paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific
value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to
produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a
demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral
education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant's activity in the
scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding,
international research experience and international elected positions as
well as leadership and interaction skills.
The salary will be based on levels 8?10 of the demands level chart for
teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish
universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component
based on personal work performance.

professional skills to perform all the duties of the position.
Swedish language skills are not a requirement at the time of entering the
position. The applicant should, however, be prepared to carry out teaching
and administration tasks that require knowledge of the Swedish language
within a couple of years.
Assessment criteria: Scientific proficiency and the ability to conduct
independent and internationally competitive research within the subject
area of the position will weigh most heavily. Teaching proficiency will
receive second most weight. Documented administrative proficiency,
experience in acquiring external funding for research, and the ability to
communicate and promote increased scientific awareness to society at large
will also be considered.
Teaching and learning theory: Higher education teaching theory, or
corresponding knowledge obtained in another manner, is to be given credit.
Candidates lacking formal advanced education in teaching theory,
corresponding to a minimum of 7.5 higher education credits, and who are
judged not in possession of corresponding teaching skills, must pursue
such studies during the first two years of employment.
Additional information: Since most professors at the Faculty of Humanities
are men, we particularly welcome female applicants.
