Dear colleagues,

The Master LoPhisc in Logic, Philosophy of Science & Epistemology jointly administered by Pantheon-Sorbonne University (Paris 1) and Paris-Sorbonne
University (Paris 4) is a 2-year graduate programme which provides  students with the opportunity to work in depth within a particular area of  the field, while acquiring advanced knowledge across the breadth of these
disciplines. The course welcomes students from a range of disciplines who want to acquire a high level of competence in one of the areas of the programme, as well as analytical, communication and research skills.
The LoPhiSC programme is set in a thriving research environment, with outstanding research and teaching staff. Students will conduct research
and attend lectures mainly at the Sorbonne in Paris and at other affiliated academic institutions in central Paris, which provide extra learning opportunities in neighbouring fields such as cognitive science.
On completion of the programme, students will be in a position to begin work on a PhD dissertation (a small number of doctoral scholarships are  available to outstanding students from the European Union). Graduates will be also well positioned to complete their training in view of a variety of careers involving a critical understanding of science, in education,
scientific journalism and web-based information, scientific administration and policy-making, or expertise. Lectures and seminars are generally given
in French, although quite a lot of the required reading is in English.
Some initial command of French is thus necessary, but can be improved

Analytic Theology Project, 2nd Summer School:
Philosophical Perspectives on Theological Realism

All research initiatives within the Analytic Theology Project aim at examining the traditional questions of theology from the perspective of contemporary Christian theology and analytic philosophy. The Summer School 2013 will focus on the issue of Theological Realism proceeding from the observation that the debate initiated by analytic approaches to the Philosophy of Religion can be characterised by three areas of discussion: the relation between the Philosophy of Religion and other philosophical disciplines, the connection between Philosophy of Religion and Theology and finally the correlation between the Anglo-American and the Continental Philosophy.
For the Short Paper Sessions during the afternoons, contributions to the following areas are welcome: Philosophy of Religion and other philosophical disciplines, Epistemological Realism, Metaphysical Realism, Moral Realism. Contributions to four ways of challenging Theological Realism are also welcome: Pragmatism, Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, German Idealism.

 BRITISH SOCIETY FOR THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE
DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION 2013

The Society announces that it will be offering a scholarship for doctoral work in the philosophy of science at a UK university, subject to a candidate of sufficient merit presenting themselves. The level of the
award will be the same as that of AHRC funding and will cover fees and maintenance. Scholarships will be awarded for a period equal to the institutional norm for PhD study at the student's institution minus any
time already spent on the PhD (i.e., up to 3 years at most UK institutions). The BSPS award will not be made to anyone with another  source of funding [though see note 1]. Applicants must have applied for
other sources of funding for which they are eligible. The closing date for applications is midnight GMT Wednesday 1 May 2013. (It is anticipated that
applicants will be informed of the outcome by early June.) Applicants are responsible for ensuring that complete applications, including references, arrive by the deadline. Applicants are therefore advised to give their
referees and proposed supervisor clear notice of the deadline by which materials are required.

The competition is open both to Home/EU and to international students,
provided that they will have been accepted onto an appropriate doctoral
programme in philosophy of science at a UK university in time for the
start of the 2013-14 academic year.

Incomplete applications, including those with missing references or
missing supervisors' statements, will not be considered.

How to Apply:

A) Applicants should send (as a single pdf file):

1. A covering letter;
2. A curriculum vitae (no more than 2 sides of A4);
3. An outline of the proposed research (no more than 500 words);

4. A statement that i) sets out whether or not they have any other funding
in place and what and how much if so; which ii) sets out what other
sources of funding they have applied for and the dates at which they will
hear whether these applications have been successful; and iii) explains
the institutional norm for PhD completion at their proposed institution
(i.e. whether their institution follows a 1+3 model or a 2+2 model for MA
and PhD study, for example).

In addition:

5. If the applicant has already been accepted onto an appropriate doctoral
programme, they should provide evidence that this is so. Otherwise, the
award will be made to a successful candidate subject to confirmation at a
later date of their having been accepted onto an appropriate programme.

B) The proposed supervisor should send a brief statement (no more than 500
words) explaining why they are happy to supervise the applicant on the
proposed project and how and why the supervisor's institution is a good
fit for the person and project. [See Note 2.]

C) Two academic referees (which could include the supervisor) should write
reference letters directly to the Honorary Secretary.

Notes

1. In cases where applicants have minimal funding from other sources this
will be made up to AHRC levels by the BSPS grant. (For example, an
applicant who has a fees-only award from elsewhere would be eligible to
apply for a maintenance grant from the BSPS.)

2. Applicants may be in the position of considering a number of different
departments for their doctoral studies and thus have a range of possible
supervisors in mind. In this event, they should ask their currently
preferred supervisor to write for them. Should an applicant be successful
in the BSPS doctoral scholarship competition, but end up being accepted
onto a PhD programme at a different institution from that of the
supervisor who initially wrote for them, it would still be possible to
hold the award at the new institution, subject to a suitable endorsement
from the new supervisor. It should be noted that where it is obvious that
a given applicant and project is a good fit to supervisor and institution,
supervisors' letters may be rather brief without thereby disadvantaging
the candidate.

1. Würzburg Summer School for Cultural and Literary Animal Studies, gefördert von der VolkswagenStiftung

In den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften sind in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Tiere in den Fokus des Interesses gerückt. Die Cultural and Literary Animal Studies verfahren interdisziplinär, sie versammeln so unterschiedliche Forschungsdisziplinen wie Philosophie, Kunstgeschichte, Filmwissenschaft, Literaturwissenschaften, Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Kulturwissenschaft, Biologie, Psychologie, Anthropologie, Geographie, Soziologie und Rechtswissenschaften. Die ?Würzburg Summer School for Cultural and Literary Animal Studies? versammelt diese interdisziplinär gestellten Fragen und geht der historischen und systematischen Position der Tiere in unserer Kultur in drei aufeinander aufbauenden, dabei aber jeweils eigene und eigenständige Schwerpunkte setzenden Jahresthemen nach. Mit der ersten Summer School 2012 unter dem Thema ?Nature, Culture, Agency? standen generelle Fragen nach einer Epistemologie und Methodologie der CLAS im Vordergrund. Die diesjährige Summer School wird sich dem Jahresthema der ?Politischen Zoologie? widmen, 2014 folgt das Jahresthema ?Zoologische Ästhetik?. In jedem Jahr wird das Thema durch Keynote Lectures, Workshops zu Tiertheorien und Tierthemen, Podiumsdiskussionen, künstlerische Präsentationen und offene Formate zur Projektentwicklung und ?vernetzung untersucht. Die Summer Schools richten sich vorrangig an NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen, die ein einschlägiges Projekt bearbeiten und das Feld der CLAS gemeinsam mit den WorkshopleiterInnen und Vortragenden ? NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen und WissenschaftlerInnen, die die Grundlagen zu den CLAS gelegt haben ? erkunden und entwickeln wollen.

2. Summer School 2013: Politische Zoologie

Im Zentrum der Summer School 2013 zur ?Politischen Zoologie? (23.09-28.09.2013) steht eine politisch-historische Frage: Was sind die politischen und sozialen Funktionen der Tiere? Wie steht es um den Zusammenhang von Politik, Poetik und Geschichte der Tiere? Tiere sind sowohl Ordnungszeichen als auch Ordnungsinstrumente: Sage mir, an welchen Ort du welche Tiere stellst, und ich sage dir, wie die Kultur funktioniert, in der du lebst. Solche Tierordnungen lassen sich im Rahmen einer Politischen Zoologie erfassen. Die Analyse politischer Zoologien bezieht sich nicht auf eine gegebene biologische, sondern auf eine entworfene kulturelle Ordnung; unter Einschluss naturwissenschaftlicher Perspektiven bewegt sie sich in biokulturellen bzw. kulturbiologischen Räumen. Sie widmet sich sowohl Theorien (z.B. Evolution) als auch Institutionen (z.B. Zoo) und Praktiken (z.B. Züchtung). Von historischem Interesse ist dabei ein weiter Zeitraum: Frühe Neuzeit, Moderne, Gegenwart. Untersucht werden soll die politische Zoologie ausgehend von exemplarischen Fallstudien literarischer, zoologischer, philosophischer und juristischer Texte.

Mit zwei Keynote Lectures (Susan McHugh, Maine/USA; Tom Tyler, Oxford/GB) geht die Summer School 2013 Fragen der Repräsentation von Tieren in unserer Kultur nach und befragt anthropozentrische Konzeptionen auf ihre politischen Ordnungsfunktionen. Der Konstanzer Neurobiologe Christoph Kleineidam debattiert mit dem Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftler Niels Werber (Siegen) über das ?social decision-making? von Insekten und Menschen. Die Choreographin Antonia Baehr präsentiert mit der Performance ?My dog is my Piano? unmögliche Möglichkeiten der Kohabitation von Tieren und Menschen und diskutiert darüber im Anschluss mit der Berliner Tanzwissenschaftlerin Gabriele Brandstetter.  Eine Tierspurensuche führt die TeilnehmerInnen am Exkursionstag an einen prominenten Ort der politischen Zoologie. In Workshops wird das Thema exemplarisch und theoretisch bearbeitet. In Theorieworkshops (geleitet durch TeilnehmerInnen der Summer School) lesen und diskutieren wir grundlegende theoretisch-methodische Positionen zur politischen Zoologie. In drei parallel laufenden Themen-Workshops soll das Thema exemplarisch vertieft werden:

A) ?Anomalien/Delinquenzen? (Harald Neumeyer, Antonia Eder): Der Workshop möchte Tiere als Figurationen von Abweichungen und Ausschließungen diskutieren. Dabei ist sowohl das Moment der Abweichung als auch der Prozess der Ausschließung zweifach auszudifferenzieren ? einmal hinsichtlich herrschender Normen und einmal in Bezug auf gültige Gesetze. Im ersten Fall soll es demnach um Abweichungen und Ausschließungen gehen, die im Zeichen einer anthropologischen, medizinisch-psychologischen und/oder sozialen Ordnung bestimmt und vorgenommen werden, im zweiten um solche, die im Namen einer religiösen, juristischen und/oder politischen Ordnung stehen.

B) ?Völker/Schwärme? (Eva Johach, Martina Munk): Die Erforschung von Insektenvölkern ist seit ihrem Beginn eng mit der Reflexion über menschliche Gesellschaftsbildung verbunden. Die fleißigen und dem Gemeinwohl des Schwarmganzen verpflichteten Ameisen und Bienen fungierten nicht selten als politisch-moralisches Vorbild, konnten in ihrem heillosen Gewimmel und ihrer ?totalitären? Organisation aber auch Sinnbild für gesellschaftliche Nivellierung und Uniformierung sein. Der Workshop verfolgt das Paradigma des Insektenschwarms in seinen utopischen und dystopischen Implikationen vom 18. Jahrhundert bis hinein in die Konjunktur der Schwarmintelligenz der jüngsten Gegenwart.

C) ?Jagd/Herrschaft? (Roland Borgards, Alexander Kling): Mit der Jagd kreuzen sich zwei Herrschaftsbeziehungen: erstens die zwischen Mensch und Tier und zweitens die zwischen Obrigkeit und Untertanen. Der Workshop befragt die Jagd als kulturelle Praxis in Hinsicht auf ihre ambivalente Funktion für die Formierung menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Kollektive sowie für die Legitimation politischer Ordnungen. Ausgangspunkt für die Diskussionen im Workshop werden literarische Texte, Jagdtraktate, historische Berichte von Jagdpraktiken und Jagd-Bilder von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die Moderne sein.

Wir erwarten NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen aus verschiedenen Disziplinen und Ländern und verstehen die Summer School als Labor für den Forschungsbereich. Es wird die Gelegenheit zur Vorstellung und Diskussion eigener Projekte ebenso geben wie Räume zur Vernetzung und Entwicklung.

Für die Summer School 2013 stehen 33 vollfinanzierte Stipendien zur Verfügung, die sowohl Reise- als auch Übernachtungskosten abdecken. Philosophy PhD Scholarship (Managing Severe Uncertainty)

The Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method at the London School of Economics and Political Science is offering a three-year
scholarship for students commencing their MPhil/PhD in Philosophy in  September 2013. The scholarship provides full tuition fees and living  expenses of approximately £15K per year for the three years. The  scholarship is attached to an AHRC funded research project on Managing  Severe Uncertainty and successful candidates will be expected to pursue  doctoral research into one of the areas covered by the research project:
decision making under severe uncertainty, uncertainty in scientific  modelling and the implications of scientific uncertainty for policy  making. In addition, applicants must be UK or EU residents and meet the
normal entry requirements for the MPhil/PhD in Philosophy. To be  considered for the Philosophy PhD Scholarships, you must submit an
application for the MPhil/PhD in Philosophy at the LSE no later than the  15th June, including a research proposal which specifies the contribution
of your proposed research to the project.

Pfingstkurs Philosophie 2013 with Prof. Georges Rey (Maryland), May 15-17 2013, at Bielefeld University
 
This year’s “Pfingstkurs Philosophie” will be held by Prof. Georges Rey under the heading “A Naturalistic Cartesianism”. Please find details on the course below. Overview: A cluster of “Cartesian” views have traditionally been contrasted with “naturalistic” approaches to the mind.  And, of course, what seems to be Descartes’ substance dualism, his theism, and aspects of his foundationalism can certainly try a naturalist’s patience.  I have surprised my own naturalistically inclined self, however, by considering a number of ways in which some Cartesian views can be easily accommodated by at least (what I call) a causal-computational/representational approach to thought (CRTT).  In these lectures, I’ll sketch some possible accommodations of Cartesian appeals to intuitions, introspections, innate ideas, reason, meanings internal to a mind, and even a Cogito based argument for CRTT itself!  I’ll conclude with a sketch, which I call "CRTQ," of how the approach might handle the phenomena of consciousness and qualia that at least modern Cartesians, and Descartes in part, would be wont to defend.   But this will involve some scepticism about these phenomena as standardly understood, a scepticism motivated not by the naturalistic approach I defend, but by entirely internal considerations about them.  What I hope to achieve in all of this is a more nuanced and precise idea of the “explanatory gap” between the physical and the mental than I find in the recent literature on the issue.

Die Berlin School of Mind and Brain bietet zum Wintersemester 2013/14
einen englischsprachigen, interdisziplinären Masterstudiengang „Mind and
Brain“ an. Der Master wurde im Rahmen der erfolgreichen Exzellenz-
Bewerbung der Berlin School of Mind and Brain konzipiert, in
Zusammenarbeit mit der Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin und den
Instituten für Psychologie, Philosophie und Linguistik der Humboldt-
Universität.

Über das Masterprogramm

Die zentralen Forschungsthemen der Berlin School of Mind and Brain –
“Entscheidungsfindung”, „Wahrnehmung, Aufmerksamkeit, Bewusstsein“,
„Sprache“, „Hirnplastizität und ontogenetische Entwicklung“, „Erkrankungen
des Gehirns und kognitive Störungen“, „Soziale Kognition“ - lassen sich
nur in der Zusammenarbeit unterschiedlicher Disziplinen wie Psychologie,
Linguistik, Neurowissenschaften und Philosophie bearbeiten.

Die innovative Forschung der Berlin School of Mind and Brain wird in dem
Master in ein interdisziplinäres Studienangebot umgesetzt. Das Ziel der
Ausbildung des Masterstudiengangs „Mind and Brain“ ist es, Studierende mit
neuesten Forschungsergebnissen der Mind-Brain-Forschung und den
Erkenntnissen der unterschiedlichen am Diskurs beteiligten Disziplinen
vertraut zu machen.

Studieninteressierte

Das Masterprogramm richtet sich an Studierende mit einem Bachelorabschluss
in Psychologie, Philosophie, Linguistik, Biologie,
Kognitionswissenschaften, Neurowissenschaften oder verwandten Fächern.

Eine Besonderheit des Masters „Mind and Brain“ besteht darin, dass zwei
unterschiedliche Abschlüsse erworben werden können: Auf dem Track Brain
des Studiengangs wird der M.Sc. (Master of Science), auf dem Track Mind
der M.A. (Master of Arts) erlangt. Im Rahmen der beiden Tracks können
Studierende entsprechend ihrer Interessen und Berufsperspektiven
Schwerpunkte in ihrem Studium setzen.

Zum Inhalt:
Der Begriff der Identität ist für die Philosophie von grundlegender Bedeutung. Denn die Beantwortung vieler philosophischer Fragen macht es erforderlich, eine bestimmte Position in Debatten über Identität und Verschiedenheit zu beziehen. Einige dieser Fragen – wie etwa die Frage nach natürlichen Arten und biologischen Kategorien oder auch die Frage nach Sortalen und Individuierung – sollen in anderen der geplanten Workshops genauer untersucht werden.

In diesem Workshop sollen dagegen die grundlegenden Fragen diskutiert werden, die sich unmittelbar an den Begriff der Identität knüpfen. Gibt es so etwas wie absolute Identität gibt, oder ist Identität stets nur relativ zu einem bestimmten sortalen Begriff zu verstehen? Wie stellt sich der Zusammenhang zwischen der Identität und der Anzahl von Gegenständen dar? Bestimmt jeder sortale Begriff ein Kriterium für das Zählen der unter ihn fallenden Gegenstände? Hat die Rede von Identität in allen Kontexten dieselbe Bedeutung: z.B. in empirischen und in mathematischen Sätzen? Wie stellt sich der Zusammenhang zwischen synchroner und diachroner Identität dar? Drücken bestimmte Identitätsätze de re Notwendigkeiten aus?

Die 8. Cologne Summer School in Philosophy (CSSiP) über

"Radical Scepticism"

findet vom 23.-27. September 2013 am Philosophischen Seminar der Universität zu Köln statt. Unser diesjähriger Gast wird Duncan Pritchard (University of Edingburgh) sein.

Duncan Pritchard betrachtet das skeptische Problem aus einer ganz neuen Perspektive und stellt einen innovativen Lösungsansatz vor. Der Skeptizismus lässt sich ihm zufolge aus zwei fundamentalen, aber sehr unterschiedlichen Annahmen erklären: (i) dem Geschlossenheitsprinzip, wonach wir alltägliche Dinge nur wissen, wenn wir wissen, dass die skeptische Hypothese falsch ist; (ii) der Annahme, dass unsere Urteile über die Welt durch die Gründe, die uns zur Verfügung stehen, unterbestimmt sind. Pritchards Lösung basiert auf den komplementären Ideen der begrenzten Reichweite und der Faktizität von Gründen.

Die Kölner Sommerschule richtet sich an professionelle Philosophen und fortgeschrittene Studierende. Die Teilnahme ist kostenfrei, jedoch ist die Teilnehmeranzahl auf 50 begrenzt – die Teilnehmer werden anhand ihrer Motivation und Qualifikation ausgewählt. Online Bewerbungen sind bis zum 15. The Department of Philosophy, University of Kent invites applications MA
in Reasoning.

We offer a wide variety of topics and modules, in all areas of philosophy.
Our department is a place of academic brilliance, friendly exchange,
intellectual excitement and diversity. In our weekly departmental research
seminar colleagues and philosophers from other universities present their
current work, and in our thriving student-run graduate seminar students
discuss their ideas with peers and members of staff. We host a Centre for
Reasoning and are connected to the Aesthetics Research group, both
offering their own weekly research seminars. We are part of the School of
European Culture and Languages, which encourages interdisciplinary
connections, especially with Religious Studies, Linguistics, German,
French, Italian, and Classics.

We offer a scholarship covering the fees for home and EU students. The
application deadline is 4 April 2013.

The latest Guardian League Table ranks our graduate employment rate as
third best in the country, better than Oxford and beaten only by Cambridge
and Durham. In the undergraduate National Student Survey 2012 Philosophy
at Kent had a 89% overall student satisfaction rate.

MA in Reasoning
(1 year full-time or 2 years part-time)
This MA programme offers a selection of topics related to reasoning and inference. It
covers areas such as cognitive science and AI; scientific, mathematical, logical, causal
and inductive reasoning; philosophy of mind, logic and language. The programme is
ideally suited to students with philosophical training who would like to pursue their
undergraduate interests yet develop skills that make them attractive to a broad range of
employers, or who would like the advanced training required for a PhD in this area. The
flexibility of this programme enables you to negotiate your own path of study through a
range of topics. Students can focus exclusively on philosophical topics or can study
reasoning-related topics in Psychology, Computing, Statistics, Law, Social Policy,
Biosciences and History.

This workshop is primarily addressed at PhD students and aims to improve and promote methodological awareness in ethics by a discussion about methodological implications and presuppositions of moral particularism, which is the position that adequate moral thought and judgement do not depend on (and maybe do not even admit of) the development and application of moral principles. Many philosophers concede, that people don't usually rely on moral principles in their everyday moral judgements. But may philosophers also fear that if moral particularism's main thesis would turn out to be true, this would result in a severe limitation of the argumentative resources of ethical discourse – especially for philosophers working in the field of applied ethics. Whether this is really the case is one of the questions that this workshop will address. Moreover, a confrontation with moral particularism is a good starting point for investigating the question of what an adequate justification of moral judgements can consist in – after all, particularism rules out some of the most popular answers given by traditional theories and thereby forces to widen the spectrum of possible answers. In turn, it is equally interesting to ask what sort of evidence speaks in favour of moral particularism and whether this kind of evidence stands in a special relation to a specific philosophical method or a specific conception of philosophy.

The workshop is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) and the University Research Priority Program (URPP) for Ethics at the University of Zurich.

The workshop is primarily addressed at PhD students, but is also open to advanced Master students, Post-docs and other scholars interested in the topics discussed.

1. Nature of the Award

1.1 The award shall consist of $1,000, given annually to a graduate
student who is working on a dissertation on the philosophy of information
(broadly construed).

2. Purpose of the Award

2.1 The purpose of this award is to encourage and support scholarship in
the philosophy of information.

3. Eligibility

3.1 The scholarship recipient must meet the following qualifications:
(a) Be an active doctoral student whose primary area of research is
directly philosophical, whether the institutional setting is philosophy,
information science, media studies, or another discipline; that is to say,
the mode of dissertation research must be philosophical as opposed to
empirical or literary study;
(b) Have completed all course work; and
(c) Have had a dissertation proposal accepted by the institution.

3.2 Recipients may receive the award not more than once.

4. Administration

4.1 The Litwin Books Award for Ongoing Doctoral Dissertation Research in
the Philosophy of Information is sponsored and administered by Litwin

The Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science at the Department of Philosophy
and Moral Sciences of Ghent University, Belgium, invites applications from
prospective students for its Postgraduate Studies in Logic, History and
Philosophy of Science.

The curriculum is meant for masters in philosophy as well as for masters in
specific sciences. This intensive programme lasts 1 year, with basic courses
from 4 different packages (logic, history of science, philosophy of

Das Fellowship soll eine philosophische, wissenschaftliche, publizistische oder künstlerische Arbeit befördern. Der Auswahl soll nicht das Prinzip der Graduierung zu Grunde gelegt werden, sondern das der Originalität und Zukunftsträchtigkeit jenseits einengender Forderungen des akademischen Betriebs.

Das Kolleg Friedrich Nietzsche in der „Villa Silberblick“ versteht sich als produktiver Ort des Diskurses über zeitgenössische und zukunftsweisende Probleme von Mensch und Gesellschaft – und ist dabei ganz im Sinne Nietzsches:
multiperspektivisch und kosmopolitisch.

(EGENIS). Egenis has a strongly interdisciplinary culture, encompassing a

connected with his ERC project entitled ’A Process Ontology for
